Name Change in Voter ID Card: You Are Correcting the Roll, Not the Card

Most guides treat this as reprinting a card. It is not. Your voter ID card is a printout of one line in the electoral roll, and what you are changing is that line. Once that lands, everything else about the process makes sense: which form to use, why a Booth Level Officer turns up, and why it costs nothing.

Rs 0A correction of entries carries no government fee
4Entries correctable in a single Form 8, so batch them
7Days the ERO posts your application for public objections
~30Days is the typical processing norm, longer near elections
Quick answer

File Form 8 with your Electoral Registration Officer, online through the Voter Services Portal at voters.eci.gov.in or through the Voter Helpline app, selecting correction of entries in the existing electoral roll. Attach self-attested documentary proof of the correct name. There is no fee. Most corrections complete within a few weeks, subject to verification.

Key points before you start

  • This is a correction to the electoral roll. The card follows the roll, not the other way round.
  • Form 8 covers four different things. Pick the right category or the application goes nowhere.
  • You can correct up to four entries in a single Form 8, so batch them.
  • It is free. Nobody should be charging you a government fee for this.
  • The form carries a declaration with a statutory penalty. Read it before ticking.
  • Your existing card stays valid while the correction is processed.

The Card Is a Printout of the Roll

Name change in voter ID card showing the correction being made to the electoral roll entry behind the card
The roll entry is the record. The card in your wallet is a printout of it.

The Election Commission maintains an electoral roll for every assembly constituency. Your entry in that roll carries your name, your relation's name, your age, your address and a photograph. The EPIC, the card in your wallet, is generated from that entry.

So a name change here is an amendment to a government register, which is why it is handled by an Electoral Registration Officer rather than by a print shop, why somebody may come to verify, and why the change shows up in the roll before it shows up on any card you hold.

It also explains the one thing people find odd: your old card does not become invalid the moment your name changes. It remains your card until the roll is amended and a new one is generated or downloaded.

Form 8 Covers Four Different Things. Pick the Right One.

This is where most applications go wrong at the first screen. Form 8 has four stated purposes:

The four categories of Form 8 and when each applies
CategoryUse it when
Shifting of residenceYou have moved and your address entry needs to change
Correction of entries in existing electoral rollYour name, or another detail, is wrong or has changed
Issue of replacement EPIC without correctionYour details are right but the card is lost, damaged or worn
Request for marking as Person with DisabilityTo have that marking added to your entry

For a name change or a spelling fix, you want the second one. If your name is correct and you simply want a fresh card, that is the third, and choosing the wrong one either produces a card with the old name still on it or a correction you did not want.

Form 8 is addressed to the Electoral Registration Officer of your assembly or parliamentary constituency, which is worth knowing if you end up following it up in person.

What the Ranking Pages Get Wrong

We read what currently ranks for this search and checked it against Form 8 itself. Four problems repeat.

"Fill Form 8" with no mention of the categories

Ranking pages treat Form 8 as one form for one job. It is one form for four different jobs, and the commonest filing error is picking the wrong one: replacement EPIC when you needed correction of entries produces a fresh card with the old name still on it. The four categories are stated on the form; the table above quotes them.

"Correct one detail at a time"

Some guides advise filing separate applications for each field to avoid delays. The form itself says the opposite: a maximum of four entries can be corrected in a single Form 8. Batching means one filing, one verification visit and one wait instead of three. The advice to split is not just unnecessary, it multiplies the queue you sit in.

Fees obscured, or invented

Several ranking pages bury the fee question or imply a charge. A correction of entries carries no government fee at all. Where a service quotes you a "government fee" for a voter ID name change, that is their own service charge wearing a costume. Charging for help is legitimate; mislabelling it is not.

"Moving cities needs Form 6", and silence on the seven days

Form 6 is for fresh registration as a new voter; an existing voter who moves uses Form 8's shifting of residence category, within or across constituencies. And no ranking page mentions that the ERO posts your application publicly for seven days of objections under the Registration of Electors Rules before deciding, which is part of why even a clean correction takes weeks rather than days.

You Can Correct Up to Four Entries in One Form

Straight from the form, and almost nobody mentions it.

A single Form 8 lets you request correction of up to four entries, and the correctable fields include name, gender, date of birth or age, relation type, relation name, address, mobile number and photograph.

So batch your corrections. If your surname changed after marriage and your relation name should now show your husband rather than your father, and the photograph is fifteen years old, that is one application rather than three. Each entry you tick needs its own supporting proof, but the filing, the verification and the wait happen once.

Documents That Support a Name Correction

The form asks for a self-attested copy of documentary proof in support of the claim. What counts as proof depends on why the name is changing:

Supporting document for a voter ID name correction by situation
Your situationWhat you would normally attach
Full legal name changeGazette notification, Part IV
Surname change after marriageMarriage certificate
Return to maiden name after divorceDecree of divorce
Spelling correctionAadhaar, PAN, passport or another document carrying the correct spelling
Relation name correctionThe relative's identity document

Self-attest every copy. An unsigned photocopy is one of the easiest ways to have an application sent back for something that took five seconds to fix.

Two notes on the documents themselves. The gazette notification for a full name change comes from the Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054, at Rs 1,100 for an adult paid on BharatKosh, per our apply for name change guide, and if that gazette PDF itself carries an error, correct it through a gazette corrigendum before attaching it anywhere. And where a date of birth correction leans on a birth certificate that is itself wrong, the Registrar of Births and Deaths amends the erroneous entry by marginal note under Section 15 of the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969, before it can anchor anything else.

How to Apply Online, Step by Step

  • 1. Register or log in on the Voter Services Portal at voters.eci.gov.in, or use the Voter Helpline app.
  • 2. Find your existing entry using your EPIC number, so the correction attaches to the right record.
  • 3. Open Form 8 and select correction of entries in the existing electoral roll.
  • 4. Tick only the entries you are correcting, up to four.
  • 5. Enter the corrected name exactly as it appears on your supporting document, spelling and spacing included.
  • 6. Upload self-attested proof for each entry you have ticked, clear and complete.
  • 7. Read the declaration before you submit it. More on that below.
  • 8. Submit and save your reference ID. That is how you track the application.

The Declaration You Are Signing

Worth its own section, because it is on the form and nowhere in the competing coverage.

Form 8 carries a declaration in which the applicant states awareness that giving false information is punishable under Section 31 of the Representation of the People Act, 1950, with imprisonment for a term which may extend to one year, or with fine, or with both.

That is not a reason to be nervous about a genuine correction. It is a reason to make sure the name you are claiming is the name your document actually supports, and not a version you would prefer. Claim what your gazette notification or marriage certificate says, exactly.

What Happens After: The BLO and the ERO

Once submitted, the application goes to your Electoral Registration Officer. A copy is posted with a public notice inviting objections for seven days under the Registration of Electors Rules, 1960, and a Booth Level Officer may verify the details, sometimes by visiting your address.

Two practical points. Keep your registered mobile number reachable, because the BLO will often call before visiting. And if you have recently moved, expect verification to take longer, or consider whether shifting of residence is the category you actually need.

What It Costs

Nothing. A correction of entries under Form 8 carries no government fee. Unlike the gazette fee heads, which move commonly each financial year, there is no fee schedule here to track at all.

A replacement EPIC may attract a small charge in some circumstances, so check on the portal when you request one, but the correction itself is free.

If anybody quotes you a government fee for a voter ID name change, they are describing their own service charge. That is a legitimate thing to charge for, but it should be named as what it is.

BLO verificationDays to weeksKeep your mobile reachable; a visit is possible
ERO decisionWithin ~30 days typicallyLonger during roll revision or before an election
e-EPIC downloadImmediately after approvalA replacement physical card can be requested after

Expect a few weeks in the ordinary course, and longer around electoral roll revision periods or in the run-up to an election, when ERO offices are handling large volumes.

Track it with your reference ID on the portal. If nothing has moved after a month, follow up with your ERO rather than filing a second application, since duplicates slow the queue rather than jumping it.

e-EPIC: Download Instead of Waiting

Once your correction is approved, you do not have to wait for a card to arrive.

The e-EPIC is a digitally signed PDF version of your voter ID, downloadable from the portal. It is quicker than waiting for print and dispatch, and it is accepted in the same places a physical card is.

If you need the physical card as well, request a replacement EPIC after the correction has been approved, not before, so the new card carries the corrected name. Where the replacement is on account of changed personal details, the form contemplates the old EPIC being returned.

Special Situations

After Marriage

The marriage certificate is normally the supporting document. If your relation name should now show your husband rather than your father, tick both entries in the same Form 8. The wider sequence is on our name change after marriage guide.

After a Gazette Notification

Attach the gazette PDF downloaded from egazette.gov.in. It needs no attestation. Do this after Aadhaar and PAN, so your documents agree with each other by the time a BLO looks at them.

A Spelling Correction

Same form and category, with a document carrying the correct spelling. If your voter roll entry is the only record that is wrong, this is a quick free fix and there is no need to touch anything else. Our name and spelling correction guide covers the correction-versus-change question in full.

If You Have Moved

Do not use correction of entries to change a city. That is shifting of residence, a different category on the same form, and using the wrong one is a common reason applications stall.

Aadhaar Linking

The Commission has a separate voluntary process for linking Aadhaar with your electoral roll entry. It is not the same as a name correction and should not be confused with one.

Where Voter ID Sits in the Update Order

Voter ID is one of the few in the chain that does not depend on the others, so you can file it early or late. Most people do it late and that is fine. What matters is that you do it, because an outdated electoral roll entry quietly becomes the odd one out in every future KYC.

Where voter ID sits in the order of record updates after a name change
OrderDocumentNote
1AadhaarOnly two name updates in a lifetime
2PANVerified against Aadhaar
3PassportWants Aadhaar and PAN to agree
4Bank, demat and PFKYC takes the name from PAN
5Voter IDIndependent of the others, so timing is flexible
6Driving licence, property and nominations

The earlier steps are on our name change in Aadhaar, PAN card correction and passport name change and correction guides.

If Your Application Is Rejected

Common causes:

  • The wrong Form 8 category was selected
  • The proof did not carry the exact name claimed
  • The upload was unclear, cropped or unsigned
  • The BLO could not verify the address or reach you
  • An entry was ticked with no supporting document

Check the recorded status on the portal, fix the specific point, and reapply. If verification is the sticking point, contacting your BLO or ERO directly is usually faster than another online submission.

Mistakes People Make

Form and filing mistakes

  • Selecting replacement EPIC when they needed correction of entries.
  • Filing three separate forms when one Form 8 could carry four corrections.
  • Using correction of entries to change a city instead of shifting of residence.
  • An unsigned photocopy where a self-attested one was asked for.
  • Filing a duplicate application when the first one is simply in queue.

Money and judgement mistakes

  • Paying a "government fee" for something that is free.
  • Claiming a name their document does not support, against a declaration with a statutory penalty.
  • An unreachable mobile number when the BLO calls.
  • Requesting a new card before the correction is approved.

Who wrote and checked this page

This guide is written and maintained by the Namechange.in documentation desk, run by Vipin Chauhan, B.Tech LL.B, with 10 years and more than 10,000 cases behind it, most of which end with a run of record updates exactly like this one. The four Form 8 categories, the four-entry batching rule, the self-attestation requirement and the Section 31 declaration above are taken from the Election Commission's own Form 8, linked below, not from other blogs.

The myths section exists because we checked what currently ranks for this search against the form itself, and page one variously hides the fee, advises splitting corrections the form says to batch, and confuses Form 6 with Form 8's shifting category.

Final Word on Voter ID Name Change

Everything on this page in ten lines

  • This is the cheapest and simplest step in the whole chain, and the one most people leave undone.
  • Remember what you are actually doing: asking an Electoral Registration Officer to amend one line in a government register, with proof.
  • The form is Form 8, and the category for a name change or spelling fix is correction of entries in the existing electoral roll.
  • Form 8 covers three other things too, and picking the wrong category is the commonest filing error.
  • Batch up to four corrections in one application: name, relation name, photograph and more, one filing, one wait.
  • Attach a self-attested copy of proof for each entry, matching the claimed name letter for letter.
  • The form carries a declaration under Section 31 of the RP Act, 1950. Claim what your document says, exactly.
  • It is free. A quoted "government fee" is somebody's service charge in costume.
  • The ERO posts your application for seven days of objections, a BLO may verify, and about 30 days is the norm.
  • Once approved, download the e-EPIC immediately, and request a physical replacement only after.
