Name Change in Aadhaar: The Two-Update Limit and How to Spend It Well
Aadhaar is the first thing you update after a name change and the only one with a hard lifetime cap. UIDAI allows a name to be updated twice, a date of birth once and a gender once. The Limit, Straight From UIDAI
This is the fact the whole page turns on, and it is worth stating with its source.
A UIDAI circular dated 1 April 2019 records the decision that the date of birth of a resident can be updated only once, and that a similar decision was taken for updation of name, which can be updated twice, and gender, which can be updated once. UIDAI's own FAQ states the same limits today: name twice in a lifetime, date of birth once, gender once.

Two things follow from that. First, treat a spelling correction and a name change as counting the same when you plan, because in the ordinary course a name update is a name update. Second, there is no annual reset. The count is for life.
One more rule worth knowing from UIDAI's exception-handling SOP of 28 October 2021: for a complete name change, or a change in the first name, the gazette notification is the document to be uploaded as proof of identity. A surname change on marriage stays on the marriage certificate, but a full change runs through the gazette first.
What Does Not Count Against the Limit
The same SOP, and a UIDAI corrigendum to it, carve out a few cases that are not counted as one of your two updates. Do not plan around these, but know they exist.
- A child recorded as "Baby of ..." being given a first full name: UIDAI's corrigendum of 2022 allows this on the birth certificate rather than a gazette, and says it shall not be counted against the two-update threshold.
- Expanding initials, such as B I Hirani becoming a written-out first name and surname, where the Regional Office verifies it against UIDAI's clarifications on name updates.
- Operator and transliteration slips at the enrolment stage, corrected as errors rather than as your update.
What Happens If You Need a Third Change
Not a dead end, and this is the part almost nobody publishes.
Where a resident needs an update beyond the prescribed limits, UIDAI provides an exception handling process through its Regional Office. The current flow, per UIDAI's own guidance, runs like this:
- 1. Go to an Aadhaar Kendra and submit the update with a valid document for the new name: the gazette notification for a full change, or the divorce decree, adoption certificate or marriage certificate where those apply, along with proof of identity in the old name.
- 2. The request will be rejected for exceeding the limit. That rejection is expected. Keep the enrolment or update slip, because its EID or URN is your reference.
- 3. Call 1947 or write to UIDAI's help email requesting exception processing of the name update through the Regional Office, quoting that EID or URN and attaching the slip, the gazette notification or other document, and the old-name proof.
- 4. The Regional Office examines it and, where satisfied, processes the update. It is slower than a counter update and it is not automatic, but it exists, and it can usually be pursued by email or post unless the office asks you to attend.
So if you have used both updates and genuinely need another, do not keep re-trying at counters and do not give up. Follow the sequence above, in that order, with your documents ready.
What the Ranking Pages Get Wrong
We read what currently ranks for this search before writing this page. Most of it is bank and fintech blogs walking through a form. Three gaps repeat.
They never mention the limit
Page after page walks through the update steps without once saying the allowance is two for life. That omission has a cost: a reader who fixes a spelling this month and takes a married surname in three months has spent both updates on what should have been one. The limit is the fact that should shape the decision, and it is the one thing the form-walkthrough pages leave out.
They answer "can I do it online?" flatly, in both directions
Some pages say yes, some say name changes always need a Kendra, and both age badly because UIDAI keeps moving the line: it announced a major expansion of fully online demographic updates, including the name, effective November 2025, verified against databases such as PAN and passport records. The only durable answer is the one this page gives: log in at myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in and see whether your specific update is offered today.
Nobody publishes the exception route
The Regional Office exception process for a third change appears in UIDAI's own SOP and its public replies, complete with the attempt-first, then-escalate-with-your-EID sequence. Almost nothing ranking carries it, which leaves people who have used both updates believing they are stuck. They are not.

An Aadhaar update is cheap. An Aadhaar update wasted is expensive, because the currency is not the Rs 50 charge, it is one of two lifetime slots. Every claim on this page is checked against UIDAI's circular, its exception-handling SOP and its current FAQ, all linked in the sources.
How to Spend Your Two Updates Well
This is the section that separates a useful page from a form-filling guide.
Batch your corrections. If your Aadhaar has a misspelt first name and you are also about to take a married surname, do not fix the spelling now and the surname in three months. That is both updates gone. Wait, decide the final full name, and change it once.
Write it out before you go. The exact name, in the exact order, with the exact spacing, as you want it to appear everywhere for the rest of your life. Read it aloud. Then compare it against your gazette notification or marriage certificate letter by letter.
Think about what is coming. If you are 24 and unmarried, one update is likely to be needed later. If a divorce may follow a marriage change, that is potentially two updates on their own. None of this is a reason not to change your name. It is a reason to decide once.
Fix the other record instead where you can. If your Aadhaar is right and your PAN is wrong, correct PAN. It has no lifetime cap.
Before You Touch Aadhaar: Is Aadhaar Even the Wrong Record?
People arrive at an Aadhaar Kendra because Aadhaar is the document they think of first, not because Aadhaar is wrong.
Do this on paper before you go. List every document carrying your name and how each spells it. Find the majority, and find the oldest reliable one, usually your birth certificate or Class 10 certificate. Online or Aadhaar Kendra?
Be careful with any page that answers this flatly, including the ones that say "you can do it online" without qualification.
UIDAI has been steadily expanding what can be done without a centre visit, and the split has moved more than once. Its most recent major change, announced for November 2025, brought fully online updates for several demographic fields including the name, verified against databases such as PAN, passport and ration records, with a wider accepted-document list. Biometric changes have always needed a centre.
The practical approach: log in at myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in and see whether your specific update is offered there today. If it is, you have saved a trip. If it is not, any Aadhaar Kendra will do it, including those inside bank branches and post offices.
Do not plan around what a blog said last year, and that includes this one.
How to Update, Step by Step
- 1. Decide the final name. Exact spelling, exact spacing, written down.
- 2. Get your supporting document ready, in original, plus a photocopy.
- 3. Check the current accepted document list and whether your update can be done online.
- 4. At a Kendra, carry your existing Aadhaar, the supporting document and your registered mobile phone, since verification usually needs an OTP.
- 5. Check the form before you sign it. The operator types what you tell them. Read the printed slip letter by letter before leaving the counter.
- 6. Take the acknowledgement slip with the update request number on it.
- 7. Track it on the UIDAI portal using that number.
- 8. Download the updated e-Aadhaar once it reflects, and keep a copy for the next steps in the chain.

Unlike the gazette fee heads, which move commonly each financial year, UIDAI revises these charges on its own schedule, and any figure printed on a website ages quickly. What is safe to say is that this is a small fee, not a large one, and nobody at a genuine Kendra should be asking you for hundreds of rupees.
Timeline and Checking Status
An update is usually processed within a couple of weeks, though it can take longer at busy periods. You track it with the update request number from your acknowledgement slip on the UIDAI portal.
Once it reflects, download the fresh e-Aadhaar rather than relying on your old printed card, since everything downstream will be checked against the current record.
If Your Update Is Rejected
Rejections usually come down to a small set of causes:
- The supporting document was not on UIDAI's accepted list
- The name on the supporting document did not match the name requested
- The document was unclear, cropped or partially legible
- The requested spelling differed from the document in a way the operator could not reconcile
- The limit had already been reached
A rejection does not usually consume an update, but do not treat that as a guarantee. Ask at the Kendra what the recorded reason was, fix that specific point, and reapply with a cleaner document.
