Name Change Service in India: Real Fees, Real Timeline, No Guesswork

Every name change service in India seems to hide its price behind a form. You call, you get a quote, and you still do not know what is a Government charge and what is their margin. This page does the opposite. Below you will find the exact fees, what our name change service covers, what it does not, and how long your file really takes.

Quick answer

A name change service prepares and checks your file so it clears the Gazette of India on the first attempt. That means drafting the affidavit, booking the newspaper notice, filling the change of name proforma, generating your BharatKosh challan, and guiding you through submission. The Government fee is Rs 1,100 for an adult. Most files publish in 15 to 45 days.

Key points before you pay anyone

  • The Government fee for an adult name change is Rs 1,100. Everything above that is a service charge.
  • No agent can submit your gazette application for you. The Department requires the applicant to send it, by hand or by post.
  • Payment to the Government happens only on bharatkosh.gov.in. Nobody takes cash or a demand draft.
  • Your gazette copy is a free download from egazette.gov.in. Nothing is posted to you.
  • Documents older than one year are refused, so a file that sits for months has to be redone.
  • Not every name problem needs a gazette. A good service tells you that before taking your money.

What You Get With Our Name Change Service in India

We are deliberately clear about the second column. A service that quotes one number and then adds the newspaper bill later is not cheaper. It is just less honest about the total.

All Name Change and Documentation Services We Offer in India

Four groups: the gazette and name change work itself, the file preparation included in every case, the identity document updates after publication, and the other records that hang off a name. Every one follows the same rule: the Government fee is shown separately, and you are told first if you do not need the service at all.

What a typical adult file costs end to end: Rs 1,700 to Rs 3,300 in Government and third party charges, plus our service fee.

The Rs 12,000 question. If a provider quotes Rs 12,000 or Rs 15,000 for a plain adult name change, ask them to split the quote into Government fee and service fee in writing. Most will not, because the Government's share is Rs 1,100.

How Our Name Change Service Works: Five Steps From Call to Gazette

  • 1. You send two things. A photo of your Aadhaar and the exact new name you want, spelling and spacing included. WhatsApp is fine.
  • 2. We tell you the correct route, free. Some cases do not need a gazette at all. If yours is one of them, we say so and you keep your money.
  • 3. We draft and you sign. We send the affidavit text. You get it on stamp paper and notarised locally, which takes about an hour in most cities.
  • 4. We book the notice and build the file. The newspaper notice goes out, we fill the proforma, generate the BharatKosh challan and assemble the full set, checked page by page.
  • 5. You submit and we track. You send the file to the Department of Publication, by hand or by Speed Post. We watch the weekly Part IV issue and send you the download link the moment your entry appears.

Step five is where honest services and sales pitches separate. Read the next section before you hire anyone.

The Rule Most Name Change Agents Do Not Tell You

The Department of Publication does not accept applications submitted by agents on an applicant's behalf. Applications are made by the applicant, in person or by post or courier, at Civil Lines, Delhi 110054. That is the Department's own rule, not our opinion.

So when a website promises to "file it for you at the counter," one of two things is happening. Either they are describing preparation and calling it filing, or they are doing something the Department does not permit. Neither is a reason to pay extra.

What a service can honestly do is everything up to the envelope: draft, check, book, calculate, assemble, and then track. That is the work that actually prevents rejection, and it is what we do.

How Long Does a Name Change Service Take in India?

Usually 15 to 45 days end to end. Here is each stage, and who does it.

Total15 to 45 days

Part IV of the Gazette of India is published weekly on Saturday. Festival weeks and year end slow both newspaper booking and Government processing, so plan around them if you have a deadline. NRIs should allow 45 to 60 days, because courier time is added at both ends.

What Documents Do You Need to Give Us?

For every case

  • Aadhaar card, front and back
  • PAN card
  • One address proof, if your Aadhaar address is old
  • Date of birth proof, which is the birth certificate for a minor
  • Two passport size photographs
  • The exact new name, written the way you want it printed

Add for your situation

  • Married woman: marriage certificate and husband's ID
  • After divorce: the decree copy
  • Minor: birth certificate, school ID, both parents' ID and their consent
  • Government employee: your service rule reference and the department's no objection where required
  • NRI: passport, visa page and current overseas address proof

Two rules decide whether a file passes. Nothing you send may be older than one year on the day of application, and the spelling has to be identical on the affidavit, the newspaper notice and the form. We check both before anything moves.

When You Do Not Need a Name Change Service At All

We would rather lose a small job than sell you something you do not need. Skip the gazette in these cases.

Skip the service when

  • A one or two letter spelling fix in Aadhaar. UIDAI accepts a set of standard proofs for this. Try the Aadhaar Kendra first.
  • A woman taking her husband's surname after marriage. The marriage certificate is accepted by most banks, by UIDAI and by the passport office.
  • A surname change back to your maiden name after divorce. The decree plus an affidavit is usually enough.
  • An error the office itself made. Ask that office to correct its own record. It is faster and free.

Go for the gazette when

  • The change is a real change rather than a correction.
  • A bank, employer, university or embassy has asked for the notification by name.
  • You need one document that settles the name across every department at once.
  • Your school certificate carries a name you never used, and every later document copied it.

Our name change process in India guide walks through the decision in more detail, and our homepage lists six cases where no gazette is needed at all.

Name Change Service in India for Every Case

Married Women Changing a Surname

Try the marriage certificate route first. Come to us when your first name is changing too, when the certificate spelling does not match your Aadhaar, or when an employer or consulate has asked for a gazette copy specifically.

Name Change Service for Minors

Both parents apply and both sign. The gazette fee is Rs 1,700. Get it done well before Class 9 or Class 10 registration, because correcting a board record afterwards is a much longer job, and some boards then ask for a court order as well.

Government and PSU Employees

Central Government staff follow the Ministry of Home Affairs Office Memorandum No. 190016/1/87-Estt.(A) dated 12 March 1987. It calls for a deed signed before two witnesses, an intimation to the department, the newspaper notice and the gazette entry, after which the service book is amended. A married female Government employee changing her surname often has a lighter route through a simple intimation, so check your establishment rules before spending anything. State Government staff follow their own state rules.

NRIs and Indians Working Abroad

Same three steps, at the Rs 3,500 fee, with your passport, visa page and overseas address proof attached. Most clients let a family member in India handle the notary and the newspaper booking while they courier the signed set. Allow 45 to 60 days.

Name and Spelling Corrections

A correction is not always a name change. If your school certificate carries a typing error that every later document copied, the gazette is usually the cleanest fix, because it gives every institution one document to act on. If only one record is wrong, correct that record instead. And a birth certificate error is a different job altogether: a Registrar correction under Section 15 of the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969, through the municipal body that issued it, never a gazette.

Adopting a Name of Another Religion Without Changing Religion

This has its own fee of Rs 1,350, which is Rs 1,100 plus Rs 250, and it needs an undertaking stating that you are keeping your religion and only adopting the name. Files without that undertaking come back.

After the Gazette: Document Update Support

The gazette is the key. Every other office is a lock, and they only open in this order.

The order in which to update documents after the gazette, and where each update happens
OrderDocumentWhereNote
1AadhaarAny Aadhaar KendraUIDAI allows only two name updates in a lifetime, so the spelling has to be final
2PANNSDL or UTIITSL portalThe PAN system checks against Aadhaar, so Aadhaar goes first
3PassportPassport Seva Kendra, by appointmentApply under reissue, reason change of name
4Bank and dematYour branch, and the registrar for foliosKYC pulls the name from PAN
5Driving licence and voter IDRTO and the voters portalForm 8 for the voter ID, free
6PF and UANThrough your employerNeeds the employer's digital approval, so tell HR early
7Insurance, property, school and board recordsRespective officeBoard records may need extra steps

That Aadhaar limit catches people out. UIDAI permits a name update twice, after which you are into an exception process at an Aadhaar Kendra with a valid identity proof. If you already used one on a typo, you have one left. Decide the final spelling before the affidavit is signed.

Name Change Service in India: States and Cities We Cover

A private name change is published in the Gazette of India, which is a central publication. That is why we can run a file from any state without you travelling. The route is the same from Kochi as it is from Karnal.

Why People Choose Us Over a Cheaper Name Change Agent

Doing it yourself is completely possible for a simple adult name change with no deadline, and we will tell you so on the call. Help earns its money when the case has a complication or when a job, a visa or a school registration is waiting on it.

What Happens If Your Application Is Rejected?

Files come back for a small set of reasons: a spelling mismatch between the affidavit, the notice and the form, a document older than one year, a trimmed newspaper clipping instead of the full page, an unsigned photocopy, or a missing undertaking in a religion-name case. Every one of them is preventable, which is why our checks exist.

If a file we prepared is returned for one of these preventable reasons, we correct and reassemble it, and we tell you plainly, before you pay anything, what any fresh Government or newspaper charges would be, since the Government fee is not refundable.

One thing no service can promise is a fixed publication date. The Department of Publication controls that. Anyone guaranteeing a date is guessing.

Name Change Service in India: The Questions People Ask Most

How much does a name change service cost in India?

The Government gazette fee is Rs 1,100 for an adult. With affidavit, notary and newspaper charges, third party costs come to about Rs 1,700 to Rs 3,300, and a service fee sits on top of that, always quoted separately with us.

Is it legal to use an agent for a name change?

You may take help with drafting, checking and booking. The Department does not accept the application itself from an agent, so you submit it in person or by post.

Can I do a name change fully online in India?

Partly. The Government fee is paid online on BharatKosh and the gazette is downloaded online from egazette.gov.in, but the physical file still has to reach the Department of Publication in Delhi.

How long does a name change service take?

Usually 15 to 45 days from affidavit to published entry. Part IV is published weekly on Saturday.

Do I need a gazette to change my name after marriage?

Often not. A marriage certificate is accepted by most banks, by UIDAI and by the passport office. A gazette helps when your first name changes too or when someone asks for it by name.

Which gazette is used for a private name change in India?

The Gazette of India, Part IV, through the Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054. State gazettes carry state Government notifications.

What makes the best name change service in India?

Judge it on whether the provider publishes the Government fee separately and tells you when you do not need a gazette. Both are rare, and both are on this page.

Is there a name change agent near me?

Location does not affect the process, because everything is published centrally in Delhi. A local notary is the only thing you need nearby, and every city has those.

What is the gazette name change service price?

Rs 1,100 Government fee for an adult, plus affidavit, newspaper and service charges. The full item by item list is in the price table above.

Is there a name change service for NRIs?

Yes. Same steps at the Rs 3,500 fee, with passport, visa page and overseas address proof. A family member in India usually handles the notary and newspaper while the signed set travels by courier.

Why can you not submit the application for me?+
The Department of Publication requires the applicant to submit it, in person or by post or courier. We prepare everything up to that point.

What should I update first after publication?+

Is the gazette valid in every state?+
Yes. The Gazette of India is a central publication, accepted across the country and by Indian missions abroad.
What if my published entry has a spelling mistake?+
It can be corrected with the Department, using your affidavit and newspaper page. This is exactly why we check the spelling three times before the file goes.
Do you offer support after the gazette is published?+
Yes. We walk you through the Aadhaar, PAN, passport and bank updates in the right order, so you do not make repeat trips.

Who handles your file

Namechange.in is run by Vipin Chauhan, B.Tech LL.B, who has been filing name change applications with the Department of Publication for more than five years, backed by a desk with 10 years and more than 10,000 cases in this industry. The process facts on this site come from that filing experience and from the Department's own published guidelines, which is why our fees match the official ones rather than a rounded up number.

Where a figure changes from year to year, such as the gazette fee, we say that rather than presenting it as fixed. And where a job needs no gazette at all, we tell you before you spend anything.

Final Word on Choosing a Name Change Service in India

Everything on this page in ten lines

  • A name change service should do three things: tell you honestly whether you need a gazette, quote the Government fee separately, and prepare a file that clears on the first attempt.
  • The Government fee is Rs 1,100 adult, Rs 1,700 minor, Rs 3,500 abroad, Rs 250 per extra alias, paid only on BharatKosh.
  • Third party costs run about Rs 1,700 to Rs 3,300 end to end, plus the service fee, always shown separately with us.
  • No agent can submit the application. You send it, by hand or by post, with the file already checked.
  • The entry prints in Part IV of the Gazette of India, weekly on Saturday, and downloads free from egazette.gov.in.
  • Most files finish in 15 to 45 days. Nobody can promise a fixed date, because the Department controls it.
  • Documents must be under one year old, and the spelling must match letter for letter across all three papers.
  • Marriage, divorce and small spelling fixes often need no gazette at all, and we say so free of charge.
  • After publication: Aadhaar first, then PAN, then passport, then bank, in that order.
  • Most of page one does none of this. Now you can compare properly.

The check is free. The quote is split. The file is checked.
