Almost every guide to PAN card correction starts with the form. It should start one step earlier, with the question that stops people cold: your PAN was issued by one of two providers, and you should correct it through the one that issued it. That detail is printed on the back of your card. Here is how to find it, what a correction actually costs, and the Aadhaar mismatch that brings most people to this page.

First Question: Which Portal Issued Your PAN?
Turn your PAN card over. The issuing provider is printed on the reverse.
Protean eGov Technologies, which most people still call NSDL, and UTIITSL both issue and service PAN on behalf of the Income Tax Department. They run separate portals with separate forms and separate tracking: Protean issues a 15-digit acknowledgement number, UTIITSL a coupon number.
Apply through the provider that issued your card. Going to the wrong portal is the single most common reason a first attempt stalls, and it is not something either site warns you about clearly.
If the card is worn or you cannot read the reverse, check any old acknowledgement you have, or start on either portal and see whether your PAN is recognised for a correction request.
One honest forward note: the PAN 2.0 programme is consolidating both providers onto one unified portal, and once that cutover completes the choice disappears. As of now the two portals still operate separately, so the back of your card still decides.
What the Ranking Pages Get Wrong
We read what currently ranks for this search before writing this page. Four problems repeat across page one.
Nobody tells you which portal to use
Ranking pages open with "visit the NSDL or UTIITSL website" as if the two were interchangeable. They are not: you apply through the provider that issued your card, printed on its reverse, and picking the wrong one is a common reason a first attempt stalls. The single most useful fact for this task appears on almost none of the guides ranking for it.
Every fee article gives a different number
Rs 50, Rs 72, Rs 101, Rs 107, Rs 110, Rs 119: all of these appear on page one right now, some on the operators' own blogs, because different schedules, GST treatments and convenience fees get mixed together. The honest position is a small range, set out in the table below, and one rule: the only figure that binds is the one on the checkout screen of the portal you apply on.
"A gazette notification is mandatory for a PAN name change"
Stated flatly by ranking service pages, and overbroad. A surname change after marriage runs on the marriage certificate. A spelling correction runs on an accepted proof carrying the correct spelling. The gazette notification is the document for a full name change, and only that case sends you to the Department of Publication before the PAN portal.
PAN 2.0 is reported as if it were live
Articles describe free, instant Aadhaar-validated corrections as a present-day service. As of mid-2026 the unified portal has not fully cut over, both providers still process corrections on the existing portals, and the fees still apply. What has genuinely changed is the paperwork: from April 2026 new application forms replaced Form 49A and 49AA, with tighter proof requirements including date of birth. Correct your PAN through the route that works today rather than waiting.

Tick only what you are changing. Every field you tick invites a document check, and an unnecessary tick is an unnecessary way to fail.

The Aadhaar Match Problem
This is why most people are here, even when they describe the problem differently.
Your PAN and your Aadhaar are expected to carry the same name. When they do not, the linking between them can fail, and an unlinked PAN can be treated as inoperative, which then blocks return filing, refunds, higher-value transactions and a good deal of routine KYC.
Work out which record is wrong before you correct either. List your documents, find the oldest reliable one, usually your birth certificate or Class 10 certificate, and see which of PAN or Aadhaar disagrees with it.
Then correct that one, and prefer PAN where you have a genuine choice. PAN has no lifetime correction limit. Aadhaar allows a name update only twice in a lifetime. What It Costs
Take the e-PAN unless you specifically need plastic. It is a digitally signed PDF, it is accepted by banks, employers and the tax portal, it arrives in days rather than weeks, and it costs a fraction of the physical card.

The ranges are deliberate: even the operators' own pages currently quote different schedules, and GST and convenience charges shift the final figure. The foreign address number is the one to watch. If you are abroad and have an Indian address you can legitimately use, the difference is roughly Rs 900.
These operator fees are not pegged to the financial year cycle that the gazette fee heads commonly follow; they are revised from time to time on their own schedule. Confirm the current amount on the portal at the point of payment rather than trusting any published figure, this page included.
The Free Route for an Address Change
If the only thing wrong is your address, you may not need a paid correction at all.
An Aadhaar-based e-KYC address update is offered at no fee, without a printed card, through the Income Tax side of the PAN system. Where your Aadhaar carries the correct address, this is the cleanest route, and since the address is not printed on the physical card, nothing needs reprinting.
It does not extend to a name correction. For that you go through the provider portal and pay.
How to Apply, Step by Step
- 1. Check the back of your card and go to the correct provider's portal.
- 2. Select changes or correction in existing PAN data, not a fresh application.
- 3. Enter your PAN, name, date of birth and contact details exactly as they should read after correction.
- 4. Tick only the fields you are correcting. Leave everything else untouched.
- 5. Choose e-PAN or physical card. Take the e-PAN unless you need the card.
- 6. Upload your supporting document, clear, complete and uncropped.
- 7. Complete verification, usually Aadhaar OTP based where your details support it, then pay.
- 8. Save the acknowledgement or coupon number. That number is how you track it and how you follow up.
Documents by Correction Type
Different corrections need different proof, and one generic list is not useful. Document requirements have also been tightened, with the April 2026 changes adding a date of birth proof requirement, and the accepted list is revised periodically. Check the current list on the portal before you upload rather than relying on a blog.

One note on the birth certificate: if the certificate itself carries the error, correct it first at the Registrar of Births and Deaths, who amends an erroneous entry by marginal note under Section 15 of the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969, rather than building a PAN correction on a document that is wrong.
Timeline
An e-PAN typically arrives within about two to three days of a clean application. A physical card usually dispatches within a couple of weeks and then travels by Speed Post.
Track it with your acknowledgement or coupon number on the provider's portal. If nothing has moved after a fortnight, that is the point to raise it rather than reapplying and paying twice.
If Your Correction Is Rejected
The usual causes are narrow and fixable:
- Applied on the wrong provider's portal
- The supporting document did not carry the exact name requested
- The upload was cropped, blurred or missing a page
- A field was ticked with no document to support it
- The name requested did not reconcile with Aadhaar
- Signature or photograph specifications not met
Fix the specific point named in the rejection and reapply. Do not change what you are asking for in the hope that something passes, because that is how people end up with a PAN that matches nothing.
PAN 2.0: What Is Actually Changing
You will read a lot about PAN 2.0, so here is the sober version.
It is a modernisation programme for the PAN system: one unified portal replacing the current three, a dynamic QR code on new and reprinted cards, and the promise of faster Aadhaar-validated updates and quicker e-PAN issuance as it rolls out. Existing PAN numbers do not change, old cards stay valid, and a QR-enabled reprint is optional.
What it is not, today, is a free correction service. As of mid-2026 the unified portal has not fully cut over, corrections still go through the existing provider portals, and they still carry the fees above. What has already landed is the April 2026 paperwork change: new application forms replacing Form 49A and 49AA, with tighter proof requirements.
Do not wait for it. If your PAN is wrong now and it is blocking something, correct it now through the route that works today.
Correction or Name Change?
Worth pausing on, because it decides whether you spend Rs 72 or Rs 3,000.
If PAN carries a typo and your other documents agree with each other, this is a PAN correction. Do it on the portal and you are finished.
If you are changing your name rather than fixing an error, you will generally need a gazette notification as the supporting document, and then the PAN correction follows it. Special Situations
After Marriage
The marriage certificate is normally the supporting document for a surname change, and no gazette is needed. Update Aadhaar first where Aadhaar is also changing, since the PAN process checks against it. The wider sequence is on our name change after marriage guide.
After a Gazette Notification
Update Aadhaar, then PAN. Attach the gazette PDF downloaded from egazette.gov.in. It needs no attestation.
For a Minor
A minor's PAN carries no photograph or signature, and a correction is made by the parent or guardian with the child's documents. The school-age picture is on our minor name change guide.

PAN sits directly beneath Aadhaar in the update chain, and a run of records takes its name from PAN. Work down in this order.
