Name Change After Marriage in India: What Is Actually Required, and What It Really Costs
You will read that a name change after marriage is a long, costly process that always needs a gazette notification. For most women, neither is true. Indian law does not require you to change your name at all, and where you do choose to, your marriage certificate does most of the work. This guide shows what each office actually accepts, what the real cost is, and the two things nobody warns you about before you start.
How Does a Name Change After Marriage Work?
A few minutes in plain Hindi on the name change after marriage: when the marriage certificate is enough, when the gazette is needed, and the order to update your documents.
Tap to play. The video opens in a privacy-friendly player, and the same ground is written out below, starting with the office-by-office table and the certificate route.
Changing your name after marriage is optional in India. If you choose to, the usual route is your marriage certificate, which most banks, UIDAI and the passport office accept on its own. A gazette notification is needed only where your first name is also changing or an institution asks for one specifically. The Government gazette fee, where it applies, is Rs 1,100.

Key points before you start
- No Indian law requires a woman to change her name or surname after marriage.
- Nothing changes automatically. Registering a marriage does not alter your name on any record.
- The marriage certificate is enough for most offices. Try it before paying for a gazette.
- Aadhaar allows only two name updates in a lifetime, which matters more here than anywhere else.
- Your degree and board certificates will keep your maiden name. Plan for a permanent mismatch.
- Adding your spouse's name to your passport and changing your own surname are two different applications.
Is a Name Change After Marriage Compulsory in India?
No. There is no statute requiring a woman to take her husband's surname, and marriage registration does not change your name on any document by itself. It is a social convention, not a legal obligation.
That answer appears on most competing pages, and then those same pages present the affidavit, newspaper and gazette sequence as "the process," with heavy cost estimates attached. Both things cannot be true. If it is optional, the honest next question is what the cheapest route is for the change you actually want, and that is what the rest of this page covers.
Your Four Options After Marriage
The first option is a real option and a growing one. The last option is the only one that clearly needs the gazette.
| Option | What it involves | Typical cost |
|---|---|---|
| Keep your own name | Nothing. No paperwork at all | Nil |
| Take your spouse's surname | Marriage certificate at each office, or a gazette where asked | Nil to about Rs 3,000 |
| Add or hyphenate a surname | Same as above, treated as a name change | Nil to about Rs 3,000 |
| Change your first name as well | Gazette route, because this is a full name change | About Rs 1,700 to Rs 3,300 |
Do You Need a Gazette, or Will the Marriage Certificate Do?
Office by office, here is what each one usually accepts.
| Where | Usually accepts a marriage certificate | Usually wants a gazette |
|---|---|---|
| Aadhaar | Yes, with the accepted proof list at the Kendra | Only if the whole name is changing |
| PAN | Yes | Rarely |
| Passport | Yes, on reissue | Where the first name changes too |
| Bank, demat and mutual funds | Yes | Rarely, and usually only for old folios |
| Employer, PF and UAN | Yes | Rarely |
| Voter ID and driving licence | Yes | Rarely |
| Property and society records | Usually | Where the record is old or carries an alias |
| Degree and board certificates | Depends entirely on the institution | Often, and sometimes a court order too |
| Foreign consulates and visas | Varies by mission | Some ask for it by name |
The Marriage Certificate Route, Step by Step
- 1. Register the marriage if you have not already, and get the certificate from the Registrar of Marriages. Everything downstream depends on it.
- 2. Get several certified copies. You will hand one over at each office and they are not always returned.
- 3. Start with Aadhaar. Take the certificate and your existing Aadhaar to any Aadhaar Kendra.
- 4. Then PAN, online through NSDL or UTIITSL, because the PAN system checks against Aadhaar.
- 5. Then the rest, in the order given further down this page.
- 6. Keep a simple affidavit ready stating that your maiden name and married name refer to the same person. It costs a few hundred rupees at a notary and resolves most of the mismatches that come up later with old records. The full picture on that instrument is in our alias name change guide.
No newspaper notice. No gazette. No heavy fees.
When Is the Gazette Route Actually Needed?
- Your first name is changing, not just your surname.
- A bank, employer, university, board or foreign consulate has asked for a gazette notification by name.
- Your marriage certificate carries a spelling that does not match your Aadhaar, so it cannot serve as the bridge.
- Your marriage is not registered and you have no certificate to produce.
- You want one published document that settles the name across several disagreeing records at once.
If one of those applies, the sequence is affidavit, newspaper notice, then the application to the Department of Publication, Civil Lines, Delhi 110054, for the Gazette of India, Part IV. The Government fee is Rs 1,100 for an adult, paid only on bharatkosh.gov.in. Applications are entertained only when submitted personally or sent by post or courier, and the Department's guidelines name agents and advocates as not a permissible channel. Entries publish weekly on Saturday and the PDF is downloaded free from egazette.gov.in.
Our name change process in India guide covers that sequence in full.
How Much Does a Name Change After Marriage Really Cost?
Realistic totals: the marriage certificate route costs close to nothing beyond copies and your time. The gazette route, where genuinely needed, runs about Rs 1,700 to Rs 3,300 in Government and third party charges. Fee heads are revised from time to time, commonly each financial year, so confirm on BharatKosh when you generate a challan.
| Item | Amount | Paid to |
|---|---|---|
| Marriage certificate route, per office | Usually nil | The office |
| Certified copies of the marriage certificate | Small registrar fee | Registrar of Marriages |
| One and the same person affidavit, optional but useful | Rs 100 to Rs 500 | Local notary |
| Gazette fee, adult, where the gazette is needed | Rs 1,100 | Government, on BharatKosh |
| Gazette fee, Indian citizen living abroad | Rs 3,500 | Government, on BharatKosh |
| Stamp paper and notary for the gazette affidavit | Rs 100 to Rs 500 | Local notary |
| Newspaper notice | Rs 400 to Rs 1,500 | The newspaper |
| Speed Post or courier to Delhi | Rs 50 to Rs 200 | India Post or courier |
| Passport reissue | Per the Passport Seva fee schedule | Ministry of External Affairs |
Update Your Documents in This Order
Aadhaar, and the Limit That Matters Most Here
Take your marriage certificate and existing Aadhaar to any Aadhaar Kendra. UIDAI maintains its own list of accepted supporting documents and revises it, so check the current list on the UIDAI site or at the Kendra rather than relying on a blog.
The part to pay attention to: UIDAI allows a name update in Aadhaar only twice in a lifetime. Beyond that you are into an exception process at a Kendra with a valid identity proof. If you have already used one update to fix a spelling, a marriage change uses your second. That is worth knowing before you decide, particularly if there is any chance of a future change.
PAN
Apply online through NSDL or UTIITSL under changes or correction in existing PAN data. Update Aadhaar first, because the PAN system checks against it.
Passport, and a Distinction the SERP Gets Wrong
Adding your spouse's name to your passport and changing your own surname are two different applications. They are being written about as if they were the same thing, and they are not.
For adding a spouse's name, the Ministry of External Affairs has relaxed the documentation, allowing Annexure J, a joint declaration signed by both spouses with a joint photograph and their identity details, in place of a marriage certificate. That relaxation is about the spouse-name endorsement.
For changing your own name, you apply for reissue under change of name, and the documents required depend on your route, typically the marriage certificate or, where there is none, the affidavit and newspaper notice path. Because annexure letters and document lists are revised, download the current annexure and checklist from passportindia.gov.in rather than reusing a format from a blog.
Bank, Demat, Mutual Funds and Insurance
Do these after PAN, because KYC records take the name from PAN. For demat and mutual fund folios the request goes to the registrar rather than the broker. Update nominations while you are there, since this is the moment people forget them.
Employer, PF and UAN
Give HR the marriage certificate or gazette copy early. An EPFO name correction against your UAN needs the employer's digital approval, so it will not move until they act. Left undone, it surfaces years later at withdrawal or during a background check.
Government Employees
Follow your department's own rules first. Central Government staff generally work under the Department of Personnel and Training Office Memorandum No. 19016/1/87-Estt.(A) dated 12 March 1987 for a name change, which calls for a deed signed before two witnesses. A married female Government employee changing her surname after marriage often has a lighter route through a simple intimation to the department. Check your establishment section before spending on a gazette, because in many cases you will not need one.
| Order | Document | Why here |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Aadhaar | Almost everything downstream is checked against it |
| 2 | PAN | The PAN system verifies against Aadhaar |
| 3 | Passport | Reissue, and it wants Aadhaar and PAN to agree |
| 4 | Bank, demat, mutual funds and insurance | KYC takes the name from PAN |
| 5 | Employer, PF and UAN | Needs your employer's approval, so tell HR early |
| 6 | Voter ID and driving licence | Independent, so timing is flexible |
| 7 | Property, society, utilities and nominations | Do before any sale, transfer or claim |
The One Document That Will Always Keep Your Maiden Name
Neither of the top-ranking pages tells you this, and it catches people out years later.
Your degree certificate, your Class 10 and 12 certificates and your professional registration were issued in your maiden name to a person who existed under that name at that time. Most universities and boards will not simply reissue them in a married name. Some allow an endorsement or an addendum, some require a gazette notification, some require a court order, and some will not change the certificate at all.
What this means in practice: if you change your name everywhere else, you will hold a permanent mismatch between your qualifications and your identity documents. That is normal and manageable, but it needs a plan:
- Keep a one and the same person affidavit on file. It links the maiden name on the certificate to the married name on your ID, and most employers, universities and visa officers accept it.
- Ask your university what it actually allows before assuming anything. The answer varies enormously.
- If you are in a profession with a registration number, a doctor, a chartered accountant, a lawyer, an architect, ask your council what it requires. Councils have their own procedures and they are not the same as the university's.
- If you publish, hold patents or have a professional reputation attached to your maiden name, think carefully. Many women keep the maiden name professionally for exactly this reason.
Before You Change Anything, Think About Reversibility
Two things are hard to undo, and both matter most to this audience.
Aadhaar's two updates in a lifetime
A marriage change uses one. If circumstances change later, you may find you have none left and need UIDAI's exception process.
Your professional record
Papers, certificates, registrations and a searchable work history sit under whichever name you used at the time. Changing the name does not retroactively change those.
None of this is an argument against changing your name. It is an argument for deciding once, deliberately, and getting the spelling right the first time.
If You Decide Not to Change Your Name
A perfectly ordinary choice, and it needs almost no paperwork. A few practical things make it frictionless.
- Keep certified copies of your marriage certificate accessible. It is what you produce when a form asks about your spouse.
- If you are asked for proof of the relationship for insurance, a visa or a joint loan, the marriage certificate does that. Your name is irrelevant to it.
- Your children's records will name both parents. Different surnames between parent and child are common and cause no legal problem.
- If a bank or office insists that you must change your name, ask them to point to the rule. There is no such rule.
Special Situations After Marriage
A Husband Taking His Wife's Surname
Entirely possible and follows the same rules. Because it is less common, expect more questions at the counter, and the gazette route is often smoother precisely because it produces one document nobody argues with.
Inter-Faith Marriages and the Special Marriage Act
Marrying under the Special Marriage Act does not change anyone's name automatically either. The certificate serves as your proof in the same way. If a religion change is also involved, that is a separate matter with its own state-law requirements, covered on our religion change guide, and it should not be bundled into a name change application.
Marriage Abroad or an NRI Marriage
Get the foreign marriage certificate legalised for use in India first, since every Indian office will ask for it. Where a gazette is needed, the fee for an Indian citizen living abroad is Rs 3,500 and the affidavit can be sworn at the Indian Mission where you live. The full remote process is on our NRI name change page.
An Unregistered Marriage
Without a certificate you have no bridge document, so the gazette route becomes the practical answer. Registering the marriage first is usually cheaper and simpler than working around it.
A Second Marriage
The same process, but check the Aadhaar update count before you start, and make sure earlier records, particularly nominations and insurance, reflect what you intend now.
Mistakes People Make With a Name Change After Marriage
Money mistakes
- Paying for a gazette without asking whether the marriage certificate would have done. For most offices it would.
- Accepting an inflated quote without a break-up. The Government's share is Rs 1,100, and often nothing at all.
- Assuming a degree certificate will simply be reissued. Ask the university first.
- Spending both Aadhaar name updates carelessly.
Sequence and record mistakes
- Updating the passport before Aadhaar and PAN. The order exists for a reason.
- Forgetting nominations. Insurance, PF and demat nominations are the most commonly missed records.
- Leaving the PF and UAN correction to later. It needs employer approval and gets harder after you leave.
- Different spellings across the marriage certificate, Aadhaar and PAN. Fix the mismatch at the source: a marriage certificate error goes back to the Registrar of Marriages, and a birth certificate error is a Registrar correction under Section 15 of the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969.
Name Change After Marriage From Any State
The marriage certificate route runs through your local offices, and where a gazette is needed it is central and identical from every state, by post, without travel.
The full price list for every case is on name change service in India, and a child's case has its own routes on the minor name change guide.

Name Change After Marriage: The Questions People Ask Most
Is it compulsory to change your surname after marriage in India?
No. No Indian law requires it, and registering a marriage does not change your name on any document. It is a social convention.

Through the marriage certificate route, close to nothing beyond certified copies. Where a gazette is needed, about Rs 1,700 to Rs 3,300 including the Rs 1,100 Government fee.

Aadhaar, then PAN, then passport, then bank, then the rest. Each office checks the one before it.
Can I change my name on my degree certificate after marriage?
It depends on the university or board, and many will not reissue. Ask them directly, and keep a one and the same person affidavit for the mismatch.
Can I keep my maiden name after marriage?

Does my Aadhaar name change automatically after marriage?
No. Nothing updates automatically. You apply at an Aadhaar Kendra, and remember the limit of two name updates in a lifetime.
How does a surname change after marriage work?
Same process as a full name change but usually simpler, because the marriage certificate is accepted almost everywhere.
How do I change my name in Aadhaar after marriage?
At any Aadhaar Kendra with your marriage certificate. Check UIDAI's current accepted document list, and mind the two-update limit.
